I don't know that engine, but on some of the japanese OHC 4-bangers the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt slips or breaks. Of course if that happened you could have bent/stuck valves or holes in pistons, which would certainly be bad for the compression. You said the belt isn't broken, but if it got loose and jumped a couple notches you might not notice. As for blowing the head gasket it would only take 2 "blows" (one between #1 and #2, and one between #3 and #4) to wreck the compression, it still seems unlikely that two places would blow at once. I would at least pull the valve cover, make sure all the valves were going up and down, and verify the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets. It seems to me that no matter what's wrong you'll have to pull the head or junk the engine, so you might as well just go ahead and pull it and see for sure what's wrong.

By the way, I have a bunch of factory overhaul gasket sets for some Mazda 2200 cc engine, not sure which one, and will sell you a set real cheap if it fits your engine.
