My phone number when I was a kid was CHerry 3 0492 You simply dialed CH 3 0492 Today the number is 243 0492 (CH is 24 on the keypad if you look) The captialized letters of the number were dialed as part of the phone number. We lived in the CHerry exchange and the were numerous other exchanges in the Seattle area all with a 2 letter exchange followed by 5 numbers.
Marty's HAstings would be dialed as 42 followed by 1098. The whole number had to be dialed HA 1098 or 42 1098.
