What do you think about this idea... ('59 W500)

I found 2 Cummins engines today. Engine # 1 is a V-504P naturally aspirated V8, unknown condition, so I'm sure it needs to be gone through. The other on is a Cummins V-555, fresh rebuild. The V-504 is basicly free, the "triple nickle" is a make an offer kind of deal, and I'm under the impression it could be had for $1000. Neither have transmissions, but I dont think it would be too difficult to plug a 5 speed out M35 or what not on the back as they have SAE bellhousings, and flywheels.
Think one of those would work in the W500 pictured above?
My only worry would be the 6.8 gear ratio in the axles. I'm not sure if the diesels would like winding up to any 55-60 MPH speed. I figure at 60MPH with 9.00-20 tires, the engine would be turning 3200 rpm in direct gear. I think that's right up against the governor.

Thoughts?
