Just as I hit post in response to Keith's reply on the car dolly thread, the forum refreshed, so in the intrest of safety I thought I'd repost here on #136.

What Keith was taking about in risk management. It all boils down to this, what is the likelihood that the "dolly" will fail. Let's just give it the benefit of the doubt and say that it is low - remote but could happen (fail) then look at the severity of the ensuing failure. (6000 lbs @ 60 mph), I'd have to give that a medium to high level as in could cause substantial damage, possibly hurt a number of people and could kill someone. Now you need to look at your exposure; 400 miles, 60 mph, at night?, in the rain? Again, I would have to go with a medium to high exposure rate. 400 miles is a substantial distance to be exposed to the hazard. Now, let’s add up the three parameters, remote + medium high + medium high = DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!! You may be asking yourself, “What can we do to lower the risk? “ Well, you can lower the risk by lowering your exposure as in only drive 10 miles at 10 mph, or by lowering the likelihood, and severity as in, get a real truck trailer. Bottom line is you could make it, the numbers are there, but the odds (level of risk) aren’t all that favorable.

There are no new types of accidents -- only people with short memories. Every accident has its own forerunners, and every one happens either because somebody did not know where to draw the vital dividing line between the unforeseen and the unforeseeable or because well-meaning people deemed the risk acceptable.
