The real question is not "Can I do it?" The real question is "Can I do it safely?". Do you really want an army of lawyers after you? Do you really want to hurt yourself or someone else in the one case it does not work?? Do you want your bank account to go to zero for the rest of your life?

The difference in rental price between a dolly and a trailer is minimal and is well worth the extra expense for all involved. I would gladly spend an extra $30 or $100 for the safety.

Just think of it this way, You are in court after an accident, would you rather be accused of towing in an unsafe manner with minimal or inadequate equipment or defending youself with the fact that you took all precautions and had equipment that exceeded the load requirements both in the two vehicle and trailer. Which case do you think the jury would support you on and which one do you think they would clean out your earnings for life? My neibhor is an expert witness in such cases, he determines/knows why things fail and testifies to such in court.

I am buying a trailer. The minimum I will go is 12,000# trailer. I could go 10,000# and some will even tow it with an 8,000# triler. The person who towes with a 8,000# trailer is looking for trouble. The 10,000# will do it with some safety margin. A 12,000# trailer will be nicely loaded with lots of spare capacity and no questions will be asked. You normally need to get to a 12,000# trailer to get decent tires and wheels. The frame of a 12,000# is also much better. I also could not see towing my PW and the trailer on 15" tires which most 8,000# and 10,000# trailers seem to have. Between the 10,000# and 12,000# you do not get a lot of extra capacity (2,000#) as you put a fair amount of it into the trailer's strength itself.

By the way I flat towed a PW with a tow bar for 6 miles twice in my life. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!! No matter what, it is driving you not you it. Max speed I went was 25 MPH and did not like going around corners.
