Another reason not to finish it

They can't tax you on a building until it's finished. I know a man who built himself a garage at least 20 years ago and hasn't finished it yet. Of course he parks two vehicles in it, has a complete shop set up in it, etc, but I think there's a door or a piece of siding missing somewhere. He says that the assessor used to come by now and then and ask him how he was coming with finishing the garage, and he'd always tell him he's got a little bit left to do. Nowadays the assessor never even asks and it still isn't on the tax rolls.

All of that stuff with building permits, assessments, "junk car" regulations, etc totally depends on where you are. The easy solution is to move, but it seems like anywhere nice you go, the yuppies will follow and immediately start complaining about having to look at a bunch of stuff they don't understand and wouldn't know how to work on if their life depended on it.
