Cell Phones!! Back in "our day" (whenever that was) the 2X2 analogy was probably quite accurate, and possibly a "face plant" onto the initial slope of the 4X4 learning curve. The longer, wetter, colder, and lonely the walk out for help, the better the chances of some actual "retained knowledge" being acquired in the process. The prelude to a 2X2 recovery, was the increased possibility of some creative lateral thought and experimentation in the practical application of basic mechanics such as inclined planes and levers. This sort of forced Hands On and Both Feet Forward training though, could serve a person very well throughout their life.
Modern "digital" kids seem to have a different thought process: "I don't need to know any of that s&$%, I have a cell phone! I can do anything, no matter how stupid, and I'll be able to call someone else to get me out of it." Just another step towards the total loss of personal responsibility for our own actions. Nice to think that the people without cell phone still get the chance to learn though. Sorry about the rant, it is just one of my sore spots. J.V.L.
