Is it a gear position (fore/aft) or gear diameter issue?
Get a straight edge / depth gauge and measure both PTO and tranny to see if it is a gear diameter issue.
There are the late and the early straight-cut PTOs. One w the small gear (which you have) and one with the big gear (which you need). (Dang it, I forget which is which right offhand...). The small gear just barely engages the tranny gear and makes lots of noise.
Many people get these mixed up.
