I vaguely recall an article in MV mag a while ago that said that detergent oil doesn't really clean out the engine or break gunk loose from the innards, although that is a common misconception. It said that the function of detergent is to keep soot particles suspended so that they don't stick together and form lumps. No doubt somebody here is a petroleum chemist and can explain this better.
