If you don't know the truck, I would road test this first to make sure brakes are ok, the front end is not too loose etc.

I would also have a backup plan in case you do have a problem along the way, you know, carry a cell phone, have a place or places picked out that will come and tow you if necessary etc. Take a friend if possible.

As for the stops, yes count on those. The driving position is very uncomfortable and you will definitely need rest stops. I could never go more than 50 miles or so.

My brother and I did drive our 65 FF from Lansing Michigan to Fairfield, about 500 miles (and back!). It is is slow, it did consume oil and leak from the transfer case and rear axle but we were prepared with lots of bodily fluids. We got about 11-12 mpg on a tired 251 but never going over 45.

Do indeed stay off the interstates. Even if you can get the speed up to 55 or so, it is still unsafe because of the worn suspension, bad brakes etc etc. We had to drive on 80/90/94 south of Lake Michigan and Chicago, and this was a BAD experience. We were in the way, couldn't change lanes etc. We finally got a truck driver behind us who must have taken pity because he shielded us from all the mouse heads out there....sort of our guardian angle on I-94.
