Play a pretend game with yourself, pretend you are 2000 miles into your trip and it breaks down 45 miles from the nearest town. Now grab a paper and figure out how much it will cost in money and time to get all back on the road. It isn't cheap. And remember that the shop knows you are stranded. Food, shelter, towing, tickets, etc.
Unless you like to sit on the curb for days waiting for that part to come in from the big city, I suggest you rethink your plans. I have done my share of sitting, and its not as fun as you think.
