I had that affliction, I had at least 5 VW's or the parts thereof. The disease even spread to my sister and brother.
One Monday night, at about 8:30 PM, my brother knocked on my door and announces that his Bus is making weird noises and he needs the motor rebuilt, can I do it? I told him yes, bring it by Saturday morning. He says, "No! I need it done tonight, I have to have it for work tomorrow!" Ah,...little brothers! So we backed it into the driveway and proceeded to drop the motor, put it on the bench stand, and diassembled it. The rings had welded themselves to the piston sleeves, pistons and welded themselves to the remaining parts, pretty much destroying the pistons, valves and cylinder sleeves. Luckily in those days there was a 24 hour auto parts store about 15 miles away (before chain stores), so off we went to buy pistons and parts. The motor was re-assembled, bench tuned and installed. He drove away at 1:00 AM in the morning and luckily I never saw that Bus again! He put another 50,000 miles on that 'midnight motor repair' before he sold it.
So listen to Ed, (don't expect to rebuild the motor in 5 hours, I had the tools) but if you are picking it up to drive home, the first thing you need to do is figure out what it needs, your repair may be a simple and economical repair. Driving it more may harm it terminally and cost a lot more to fix.

PS: if you own a VW always carry two items, an fire extinguisher and a full tool box!
