Yes, if I thought there was fallout, the first thing I'd want to check with the geiger counter (and avoid consuming) is local milk. The cows collect everything that falls on the grass. I would also rather get my water out of a natural spring than a creek or city surface water source. I think the worst of it passes fairly quickly, at least when we're thousands of miles away from the source.
