The clock face is just .... a clock face, and you can trace the casting time by it.
I used to puzzle over the D and N cast on markings too, until I thought Dayshift and Nightshift. Round here th emoulders usually sign their castings with some sort of stamp or mark in the sand, but of course if you are making hundreds of block castings a shift.....
If any of the physical or chemical test coupons fail, it's fairly easy to identify the batches of castings affected and just melt them down again.
