Norm,

Thanks for your input. I realize there are a multitude of variables that can have an affect on the outcome. The use of the overdrive still seems to be one that confuses me. I normally run with the overdrive engaged all the time (both with my 2001 F-350/V10 crewcab and the crown Victoria cruisers that I drive at work). I believe that Fords (I know, I know...it's a Ford) manuals state that there is no harm done in running with the overdrive engaged in both highway and/or city driving. I don't recall what it say's for towing or steep grades. I have yet to tow with my truck. When you mention locking out the overdrive on the grades, is it because there was a noticeable loss in power? What possible damage could be done if this wasn't done?

Last winter I tried to drive the Ouray to Silverton route but couldn't because of avalanche closures. I wished I could have had the experience of driving it. Especially since I was left with a Jeep Liberty (talk about no power) as a rental vehicle.
