Heck, Lately they been paying around $85 a ton for junk car bodies, short steel has been about $160 a ton and copper up to 96 cents a LB. I have even been willing to pay money for junk cars lately! The local junkyars are getting paid $170 a ton for junk cars. I am trying to get hooked up with a broker so I could make that kind of money. About 3 weeks before Christmas, I was only getting $20 a ton for junk cars! Amazing. But then again, with China buying every piece of metal they can, and with a huge disaster at a coal mine in WVA last year, it has really soared scrap prices. I work for a Tier 2 automotive supplier,and we have had to shut down some lines lately because due to the 40% hike in the steel prices our customers refuse to pay us the difference and we refuse to pay it or eat it as well. Been causing an unrest in the industry for shure. Me running a small boneyard, I have been scrapping alot of stuff, and been trying to pick up as much as I can. Right now, I could make several times more money scrappin, then I could at my full time job! Been kinda hopin for them to offer a voluntary lay off for a couple weeks so I can cut and haul! The prices are supposed to stay this high thru the end of the month, then fall flat on their face.
I feel kinda bad in a way. I got this feeling every piece of metal I haul in goes to China! Id rather my metal stay here!
