Well he may have rolled over about Sand Creek, and maybe he should have, if you believe Black Kettles version of events, but the Civil War battle at the pass was in New Mexico, in Union Territory, but well south of the Mason Dixon line. Interesting to note that the Union won because of a conscripted volunteer force, that was paid by the Territorial Governor. He was immediately forced from office for issuing Federal Script without permission. That's gratitude for you! He only saved millions in Federal gold by protecting the Colorado gold fields from the Texan Army.
