--- these are'nt "closed" universals like they use today -- these are of an "open", (big ball bearings??) so therefore lithium grease is used and the hole is used to stick a gun nozzle into/upto and pump a few shots in to refresh the grease that turns to oil and leaks out. (Much like a high-speed mower deck spindle assy. will do.
My additional thoughts would be the 85-140 weight oil leaking out and saturating the brake shoes !!
