If you happen to catch the "Essential Calvin and Hobbes" Bill Watterson explains that he never copywrited his work, and that leaves it wide open for folks to steal his drawings for t-shirts, stickers and the like. He is addressing the point when he shows they most famous one where Calvin and Hobbes are dancing around, and it turns out they're playing music at 78rpm and wake mom and dad. That strip showed up on all kinds of things.
