Start the engine and warm it up, then stop it again, put it into first, and stand on the starter with the ignition on......

One other thing to try is to block the clutch pedal right down to the floor with a block of wood before you do this, this tends to help it pop off a little easier.

With a bit of practice most of these old low-geared trucks can be slid from gear to gear just with the throttle and a good 'ear'
