Just because I have read a book about split rims, I wouldn't presume that the book made me an expert enough to Tell Mike in Idaho all about tires.
As per all of the above posts, there are many, many, many, variables. That Georgia Clay soil can expand at a rate of 18,000 psi, 4" isn't going to cut it. I've seen many Georgia, 150 year old buildings in ruins. The man asked a question, I gave him an opinion, a proper opinion based upon 35+ years experience, if you want to insure his sucess be my quest, I'd leave it up to his good judgement to decide. A slab the size that he is placing will cost $109 more to install at 5" than at 4". I think I'd spend the hundred bucks and not worry about what some egghead wrote in a book 20, sitting in a lab. When I'm looking at jack hammering my broken slab out and replacing it after the fact, that would seem foolish.
Harbor Freight could save you $100 bucks on a tool that may take your life, it is all relative and a matter of common sense. Not all opinions are valid if they cause harm.
