Hi Norm,
I am just a newbi in the building trades, I started my construction company in 1979, I dont think I am quite 399 jobs away. A thickened edge slab is an accepted method of constuction. As a matter of fact another name for it is an alaskan slab. If I am not mistaken Alaska gets even more frost than Vermont. When building a concentional frostwall we typically sink our footings 56 inches below grade. I guess what I am getting at is there are more proven and acceptable ways to do something than the one endorsed by you. I am not trying to get into a pissing contest with you, John asked for advice on how to do an economical monolithic slab. If money was no object, he wouldnt have asked the question. There are always ways to make a project "better" (read more expensive) but that dosent mean another less costly method will not function perfectly well.
Tim
