Sounds like the bushings on the Pitman arm are bad. Without the replacement tool, you will have trouble. I tried to do this very job in mine with the original box. I didn't have the tool and used a big socket as someone suggested. Mistake! I "F"'d it up. Wound up taking the steerin gbox competely apart, only to find out it was missing several more parts. Rather than waste my time any further on the old box, I bought a NOS steering gear from Sid BEck in Texas. When I got it, I bolted it on the frame, hooked everything up and that was that.
Do you have any manuals? There is an exploded view of the box in the Operation and Maintenance manual.
