Well, a John Deere is like a Cat Dozer... They are good machines, BUT your paying for the name it seems. The new JDs are good, and JD is one of the companies that still makes their own stuff. Most lawn and Garden tractors including the new Cub Cadets are made by MTD and most stuff from MTD in the last 10 years or so is JUNK! If I were to buy a new lawn tractor, Id either go with a John Deere, one of the larger Cub Cadets, a Toro WheelHorse, a Power King (if they still make those, not shure) or an Ingersoll which is built like the old Hydrostat Case lawn tractors. I currently have a 1961 Cub Cadet and a 1997 MTD Ranch King and the THe Ranch King has a 22 Horse Kohler, the Cub a 7 horse Kohler..the smaller Cub weighs more than the bigger Ranch King! THe Ranch King has been nothing but problems since Dad bought it new in '97. It is very cheaply built, and the deck spindles are already wore out! THe ONLY good part about it is the OHV 22 Horse Pressure oiled Kohler.

Personally, if it were me, Id get a Farmall Cub or Farmall A, or Ford N series, or Allis Chalmers B or CA or TO-25 Fergie and put a Belly mower under it.

Good luck with your purchase, but remember, you get what you pay for with lawn and garden equipment.
