The heavy equipment may be a bad analogy to use. A Bulldozer that weights in at 60 ton's no matter how many chains/straps will move or come free.
My dad has a D-8 and I asked him about it one time and he said well, if we chain it down and it starts to roll, all it is going to do is take the truck and trailer with it.
Unless your talking a really big(heavy) truck and trailer it's all going to roll over like you saw.
Quarry in town had a D-8, pretty spanking new. They loaded it up on a low-boy to take it somewhere to clear some land. The went oh 10 miles or so, then they had to climb a pretty big hill/grade probably 1,000 feet in elevation. The got the the site and went to back the trailer in and gee, the trailer just kept rolling back. The 5th wheel disconnected... Seems when they hooked up it didn't latch in tight. The force of going forward kept it closed as soon as they backed up the pressure was released and the trailer went. It rolled/dragged about 20 feet.

I have other stories but I'll keep it short
