The pictures are not the best, but you can see the chains hold down each axle, this method has worked well for me, and several of my friends for years, and never has anything gone anywhere. Just make sure the chains are tight, and check them a couple times during the trip.

The chains come up from under the axle tube, go over the third member, and go back out under the other axle tube. This keeps the chains away from brake lines, etc, and gives you a good purchase on the axle.

If the tires are losing air, or if you have something with big 44" tires or something, then you have to tighten the chains several times to make up for the lost air, or the large tires.

Don't chain to the frame, you will be tightening the chains every 20 minutes.

With the axles chained, the truck on the trailer may sway a bit on the springs, but that is the same thing that happens when you drive the truck down the road by itself, you are just not standing outside to see it!

The only other down side of this is if you have fancy painted axle tubes, as you might scratch the paint, but with most old trucks that is not a problem.

I am not sure what Marty does with his pretty trucks, do you use straps Marty?

Good luck Tim!

Eric
