I dont know if this is always the case but if you are able to move it around, it dosent sound like a broken axle shaft to me. I broke one a couple of years ago. My plow had sunken into the ice and frozen in. The lift piston wouldnt break it free, so I thought "no problem, I have this big manly truck, I will just break it free". Well, I broke it all right, and it was not free! Snapped a front axle right off and it locked the left wheel right up. Of course Mr. Neanderthol here figures the brake shoes must have gotten wet and frozen to the drum and so I try driving around the yard to free it up. Fortunatly, I didnt do much more damage to the inside of the ball, but certainly not for a lack of trying. Aint these rigs fun? That was when I decided it was a good time to go through the front axle and replace all the seals and bushings etc. I also installed a set of lockouts at that time.
