Be aware that when you are sending compressed air into the cylinder, you will always get some air going past the rings due to the end gaps of the rings. This is normal, and you will be able to hear it. But if you hear any hissing coming from the tailpipe or carburetor, or if you get any bubbles in the radiator, then that is not normal.

When you get the engine turned to the position where you are certain that the valves are closed for the cylinder you are checking, then put the transmission in high gear and engage the parking brake. This will prevent the engine from rotating when you apply air. If the engine is not prevented from rotating, it will rotate very quickly and possibly be dangerous if you have your hand in the wrong place.
