It is kind of sad in the strangest way. What many of us did as kids could not happen today or at least w/o ruffling other people's feathers.
From the earliest years as far back as I can remember I was around farm equipment, quarry equipment, trucks. during elementary school time, I would spend saturdays riding D-8 and D-9 caterpillars(pushing rocks), 4440 John deere tractors(plowing/discing) all with friends of my dad. My dad had a D-8 caterpillar and I would stand next to the controls hanging on to the diesel tank all day long.
One day he was done clearing some land with the D-8 and he said "go drive it" I got in the seat, I couldn't reach the pedals. On the right of the seat was a lever that you had to pull to get it going. It was spring loaded and it would lock in once you got it back far enough. with both hands I yanked on it and it started to go forward and to my dads suprise, I actually got it locked it. Boy did he start running after me to push it back forward. Mind you he was off the machine. Heck I was maybe in 2nd grade...
From sunrise to sunset I would ride my bike all by myself...home by dark I didn't get in trouble...

and in the mix, we had a Weapons Carrier that was fitted with what everyone here is classifying as gin poles. We called it a boom truck. The boom was an A-frame truss type like that found on a real crane.
One day we my dad was driving it back to our farm and the boom snapped up and over the truck and bent it... I know very little about the truck other then it was an open cab. Had about 3 spools of cable/winches in the rear bed. We also had (2) 55 gallon drums of water in the back for ballast..
