While there are some viruses out there for Linux systems, like Macs they aren't being targeted as heavily. And Linux IS unix, it's not base on unix like the Mac.
Linux does have a growing number of software tools, and is getting easier to use all the time. That being said, you will still have to go in and tweak things manually from time to time. If you buy a PC with Linux pre-loaded it will save a lot of time and headache.
Look at www.linux.org for a good starting point, as well as links to venders selling complete systems.
