Doug, your only problem would be (if you go with a small claims court) that you must be present. That would mean a trip (airfare, lodging) to go back. Those could probably be included with the suit, but they can play the game (once you get there) of delaying the hearing to the next week/month/whatever. Then you'd have ANOTHER round trip down the line. A lawyer can't represent you in small claims (that's why it's small claims, no lawyers involved). But a letter, worded as Dave states, just threatening small claims for $1,200.00 might go along way with 'scare tactics'.
(Or, you could call Guido and Vinny, "Kneecaps 'R' Us", and see if they could visit the fella'...)
