I used a vacuum gage to set the idle mixture until the vacuum was the highest reading I could get. So presumably that should be fairly lean.

And the carb is NOS, and I rebuilt it with a brand new NAPA carb kit, so I wouldn't think it would be a faulty or old carb. I don't know how else to adjust it, though. I must admit that I've been spending a lot of time letting the engine warm up lately before driving it, because it's been cold here (yeah, I know 30 degrees is not that cold...), and of course the choke is pulled out somewhat while it warms up. But I do try to push in the choke as much as I can periodically as it warms up, so as not to create an overly rich condition.
