Around here the popular thing, up to a few years ago, was spraying old motor oil underneath the vehicle and then driving in on dusty side roads to powder up the underneath and hold the oil in place. God knows old farmers kept their equipment from rusting outdoors for decade that way. Now with all the environmental concerns you would get shot if caught doing that......

From what I have read, and I am no scientist, some of the formulae used convert iron oxide(rust) to a iron Phosphate which seals the metal from any further air contact. Some like Extend have a "creep" factor which even when dry allows the chemicals to seal over minor abrassion scratches. All the modern undercoating rely on some oil/wax formulation which puts a physical barrier that evntually wears off and needs re-application.

If you think you a have rusty problems think of the salt trucks on the highways. Years ago even the drive shaft would rsut thin and twist under load. Today most counties and highway services use some kind of converter.... usually the kind that goes on white and chemiocally changes to a black coating. The only draw back is that it leaves a rough orange peal surface and never really hardens like regular paint. At maintenance time they sandblast, recoat and repaint. Like Manny says you can delay but can't prevent absolutely.

Now if my PW can last 'til I die.... heck they can bury me in it like a Viking...... Bob C.
