Never thought replacing the generator brushes would be difficult...

I removed the screws on the front and back covers of the generator to replace the worn brushes. However, all I can do is separate the covers enought to see the O-rings. When I separated the cover, I heard a click - sounded like the brushes making contact w/ the armature shaft. Unfortunately, the generator won't disassemble further.

I don't want to force anything, but is there some trick to removing the rear cover to get at the brushes. Next, how can I re-assemby it so the brushes don't contact the armature shaft too early?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
-Drew
