An oil which has multi weight designation contains engineered polymers to control viscosity (thickness) change due to heat. Generally speaking, the wider range of the two weights, the more polymers, and the less suited the oil is for severe service. Polymers age and cause the oil to thicken prematurely, so try to stick with a single weight, or at least a multi weight with a minumum spread. The term Hypoid refers to the geometry of the axle gears. If the pinion gear engages the ring gear at center height, it's a bevel gear, with straight sides to the teeth. If it engages the ring gear below center, this gives a "twist" or helical angle to the teeth, which is referred to as a hypoid angle. This is done to enhance smooth power transmission, enlarge the load bearing section of the tooth, and also make the gearset run quieter.
