When the transmission cooler is housed inside the radiator, the ATF will only cool down to the temp. of your coolant...normally 190+ degrees. I was told by a transmission builder that he prefers to disconnect the rad. cooler and only use an external cooler. He said that most internal rad. coolers have a small filter in them which can easily clog and reduce your flow of cool ATF back to the transmission and kill your overdrive planetary set. The reason I know this... he showed me the bearing failure in the overdrive section of my 99 Dodge tranny. We checked for proper flow through the radiator and found almost none.
