They are call combat wheels because they were designed for easy use in combat areas. When new, they had metal liners inside that kept a flat tire mounted on the wheel for long enough to drive away from immediate fire. The 10 ring bolts allow a COMPLETELY DEFLATED tire (with the check valve removed from the inner tube as a safety double check whenever I work around them) to be changed in field conditions when away from manitenance facilities. The ring can be unbolted and bolted back in place to change a tire. But if the person changing the tire forgets to completely deflate the tire before unbolting the ring, BOOOOOOMMMMM and major injuries or death. A teenage military vehicle hobbiest was killed in Europe in the 1980's because he did not remember to deflate the tire on his combat wheel before attempting to change it.
