you might get a copy of
Automotive Mechanics by William Crouse
it is a college text book (for industrial arts (auto shop) teachers and has detail on
how all systems work. probably an early 50's edition would be best as it would have more detail on your 48
you might also get a motors auto/truck repair manual of the early 50's
there is a 1980 edition on ebay 3583082574
which would be a start
also you should get shop manuals from VPW.
with todays liability problems you might have
the brakes done by a professional brake shop
as your family could loose everything if you had an accident (safety related) and the repairs/work causing it had not been done by a professional. check the fine print in your insurance policy.
ps. you would need to find an "old time" brake shop not a midas or tire shop that does brakes.
