Should I pour the diesel into the oil filler tube, cap it, then pour some directly into the cylinders via spark plug hole. Then turn it over a couple of cranks?

We have poured oil directly into the cylinders and it did fully turn over and almost fire off. Actually, it would have started but the fuel lines are shot and we had to pour fuel directly into the carb. Since then we did get the carb totally rebuilt and now I am trying to get the fuel tank and lines up to snuff, but running into terrible problems with the fuel sender (being a one wire unit, and supposedly the fuel gauge needs a 2 wire fuel sender unit. Apparently the 2 wire fuel sender unit is a bolt on unit, but the tank requires a lock washer unit). Regardless I don't think any of the valves, ect are stuck.
