I have to claim ignorance here, but filling it with diesel and letting it sit must be done to let it sit in a solvent bath to clean it internally. But wouldn't that cause a relubrication problem? And how the heck would you fill it with diesel right to the top unless to the top is just to the top of the oil filler tube?
