reversing 12V DC elec. motor

I need to figure out a way to make a 12VDC motor run in both directions. I want to use a big 12VDC motor to run a PTO winch I have on a trailer. I tried switching the polarity and nothing happened. Do I need a special switch or is revesibility a function of the windings in the motor?
