If you have a place to park it (hopefully a garage), the money to purchase it, and the time to sometimes drive it... I would say go for it.
There are some challenging trails north of NYC, some public, some private, that you could enjoy with either your Land Rover, or with a newly purchased M37. I live up this way, so if you do end up getting to NYC, drop me a line.

PS: My uncle travelled all over the African Continent in the 1960's with his Land Rover, and has many great tales to tell of his adventures.
