I bet your lack of torque came from the gears in those 1/2 ton axles. Most Chevy 1/2 ton 4X4's of that era have 3.08 gears, and they tow small loads fine and such, but a Power Wagon is too much for 'em. Now if it was a Cummins Diesel truck with the 3.08 gears, it woulda towed it fine! Heck if you put a set of 3/4 ton axles with 4.10 gears in it and beef up the springs, it would tow great!
