Reverse Paint Job?

Has anyone tried sanding down to the original paint? My '53 B3-126-PW truck was bought new at a Ford dealer originally, and the buyer said he'd buy it, trailer and all, if they would paint it red. So the story goes. It is sort of reddish still. I don't know what happened to the trailer, but was told it could be DRIVEN by the rear PTO shaft. Ever heard of such a thing?
Anyway, the original deep blue paint is coming through, so I thought I'd help it out with some judicious sanding. Even the fenders were painted red, so their original black paint is still there, too. If it doesn't come out ok, I am ready to repaint it the original scheme anyway.
Anybody tried this? What about the driven trailer? Could it be true?
