In our early CJ's we replaced the bearings with bronze bushings from the IH Scout. Same identical axle parts except IH used bushings and Jeep used bearings. Once the bearings were replaced with the bushings the front end was noticeably tighter, with less wander, less vibration and no more high speed shimmy. They lasted a lot longer than the bearings also. I believe part of the reason for the poor bearing performance was the state of bearing technology in the early 60's, it is surely better today with tighter manufacturing tolerances. So this swap may not yield as big as a difference in performance now.
