I have a Sun Super Tach which has a separate sending unit. Mine is 6 volt positve ground.
Mine only has one battery. This was originally a 1.35 mercury battery as I recall, now impossible to find. However I am using a 1.5 volt alkaline battery for over 15 years. It gave the same reading when I had them both to test.
