"Pressure relief valve used with by-pass type of oil filter: Closed ->When valve is closed oil pump fills passages and oil filter. Relief valve blocks oil flow from the filter to crankcase. Open-> When oil pressure is greater that relief valve spring tension, valve starts to open. Excess oil returns to the crancase. Relief valve opens passage to permit flow from filter to crankcase." They have a couple pics showing how the pressure relief valve acts as a return valve. This info is from the '46 to '54 factory Plymouth Service Manual. The blocks are directly interchanagble (up through '53) with the Dodge truck engines. I have the parts books for all three (Plymouth, Dodge car and Dodge truck ) and it is the same set up.
