they figure out a way to add a pressure driven valve for controlling flow back to the pan (and so you don't have to prime the filter on every startup) The rear pressure side fitting in the gallery is usually used for the oil gauge with a flex line in the "circuit". When you consider the whole oil filtration system its a pretty elegant piece of engineering.
