Even on a full-floating axle, you can have problems. I remember at the shop where I used to work, every so-often somebody would bring in a full-floating axle housing with one of the spindles broken off. Our welding department would weld the spindle back on. Presumably, they were overloading the part. It even happened to one of our own big 2-1/2 ton company service trucks. I guess having an intact axle shaft inside the housing and attached to the wheel kept these vehicles from doing as much damage as they could have, but I'm sure it's not a fun ride. I agree, though, it's probably better than breaking the weight-bearing part of a semi-floater, which is the axle shaft, because then your wheel is completely off the vehicle immediately.
