You're correct. The "war" to win the ratings has actually increased the amount of weight that a truck can carry in all tonages. However to be completely accurate, you'd have to weigh the truck and then do the math. Just as an exercise, if your truck weighed 4500 lbs and was rated at 6100 lbs, that'd be 1600lbs or a half ton, or 1,000 lbs +/- after oil, water driver, passengers fuel etc. were deducted. That'd get you 10 bags!
I knew a guy who bought a half ton work truck every two years, he would overload it and them bitch and complain for two years about the repairs, broken springs, worn clutch, bad brakes, etc. Then at two years he would do it all over again, he never did figure it out.
